I ran into Izzy Marshall at a Mountain Pointe practice last week and he looked ready to knock the rust off.
The former Pride all-state linebacker red-shirted last season as a true freshman and starts training camp on the Arizona State depth chart, according to the one last published in the spring.
Marshall, who is listed at 6-foot-2 and 208 pounds, is third on the depth chart at the Will linebacker spot behind senior Brandon Magee and junior Grandville Taylor.
“I feel good heading into it,” Marshall said. “I have to grind and make my way up (the depth chart) any way I can.”
That could mean Marshall will end up on some of the special teams so look for No. 38 streaking down the field on kickoff coverage or blocking on the edge in the punt formations.
“I’ll do whatever it takes,” he said. “This camp is huge. It is the first one for me and the first one with the (new) coaching staff. I want to show them I can be counted on.”
Former Pride teammate Garrett Holle, who is at Fort Hays State in Kansas, was at practice as well. The record-breaking receiver was also red-shirted as a freshman.
While Holle said he didn’t exactly like the downtime while being red-shirted, Marshall loved it.
“It was great,” he said. “You get established (in school), get fed and learn a lot. Now I have four years to get better on the field.”
