Being from Cleveland, the smile of Chief Wahoo always catches me eye.

So when I was getting ready to walk off the field at Phoenix Municipal Stadium on Thursday I couldn’t help put notice the Cleveland Indian issued equipment bag near the Mountain Pointe dugout.

Turns out it was being used by Pride pitcher Zach Cordova, who had it given to him by his uncle Marty, a former major leaguer.

It took me a second to recognize that Cordova was referring to the former American League Rookie of the Year.

Cordova, who played for four teams in his major league career spanning 1995-2004, lives in Las Vegas.

“I talked to him a lot and he helped me with signing with UNLV,” said Zach, who is 2-0 with one save in Mountain Pointe’s first three playoff games entering today’s semifinals. “It will be good having him close by.”

Cordova had a great rookie year for the Twins when he hit .277 with 24 home runs, 84 RBIs and 20 stolen bases. His other great year was with my Tribe when he hit .301 with 20 home runs and 69 RBIs in 2001.

He was never quite able to match his first year production, but still had a good career with a .274 career average with 122 home runs and 540 RBIs in 952 career games.
