Here is a quick update on what area high school teams have been doing since Christmas.

The Desert Vista girls beat Corona del Sol 2-0 quarterfinals of the Arizona Soccer Showcase on Saturday after winning their pool with a 3-0 record.

The Thunder will play Pinnacle in the semifinals on Monday at 9 a.m. with the winner advancing to the 1 p.m. final against the winner of the Rosary-Highland match.

The Mountain Pointe programs didn’t fare as well as the girls went 0-2-1 and the boys were 0-3.

The Desert Vista boys, I believe, are on their way home from California after going 1-2 in the Southern California High School Classic.

The Desert Vista boys basketball team was playing Saturday afternoon on the final day of the Basketball Classic at Mountain View after going 2-1. The day ended with a 66-50 loss to Mercer Island.

The Mountain Pointe boys lost 67-63 to Desert Mountain in the finals of the Holiday Hoopsfest after winning three in a row overall, started by a 71-50 win over Bowling Green (Ky) in the final game of difficult Bluegrass Holiday Classic.

The Desert Vista girls basketball team beat Seton Catholic 50-42 for a second straight Northwest Desert Classic title in Tucson where the Thunder went 5-0 as Kylie Butler was expected to go over 1,000 career points, needing four points in the championship game.

The Desert Vista wrestling team finished fifth at the North Torrance (Calif.) with Tristan Ezell earning the highest placement at fourth place, while Brian Mitchell and Matt Mathers finished fifth.
