The speculation heading into the Desert Vista Saguaro game last year was whether or not the Sabercats were going to be able to hang with the Thunder for a full 48 minutes.

No one questioned whether or not Saguaro could match up talent wise with the Thunder, but the depth and size of a Division III program, not matter how good it is, is different than what a DI program like Desert Vista can put out on the sidelines.

And then the way the game, won by Desert Vista 31-28, played out led more credence to the thought that DV would just wear them down. Saguaro led 28-6 at the half, but seemingly wilted in the second half.

So that’s that, right.

Not exactly at least in the mind of Desert Vista head coach Dan Hinds. He believes it was just coincidence that the game played out exactly how many thought it might.

“We did some things to put us behind last year and it snowballed,” Hinds said. “We had to play a perfect second half to win and we pulled it off.

“I don’t know if wearing them down had anything to do with it. We just played until the final whistle.”

The Thunder had a punt blocked to set up a short field for the Saguaro offense and also fumbled inside the Sabercat 20 to setup a long TD run by Arizona State freshman DJ Foster.

After the break Desert Vista pounded the ball and took advantage of Saguaro fumble on the way to the comeback.

It was one of the better games at any level in 2011. It will be interesting to see if it this year’s game can compare.
