Two young area track athletes tried their hand against their peers across the nation last week in Myrtle Beach, S.C. at the USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships were for athletes ages 7 to 19.

Desert Vista freshman-to-be Danielle Jones, running for the Arizona Cheetahs, won the 800 meters with a furious kick in the final 50 meters when she went from third to first. Jones won in 2:17.61. She also was fourth in the 1,500 at 4:53.14.

Mountain Pointe freshman-to-be Derek Ware, also of Cheetahs, injured a hamstring in the preliminaries of the 100 meters, so he decided to take it easy in the finals and coasted to a seventh-place finish.

These should be two athletes we hear plenty about over the next four years.

[thumbup] Great job to DJ and Danielle Jones! It was unusually hot and humid and all times were slower this year! But again props to ALL the athletes that endured and brought home medals no matter what place it was for! :)

Still proud of you DJ for making it this far. So many others tried but didn't make it. You're still a winner. Congrats to Danielle as well.
