The fall season is wrapping up so I’d figure it was a good time to catch everyone up on the next few weeks of action.

Cross country

The sectional events are this Friday for Division I (Desert Vista and Mountain Pointe) and Division IV (Horizon Honors). Teams have to finish in the top 50 percent of the field to qualify for state, which is Nov. 3 at Cave Creek Golf Course in Phoenix.

The top 25 individuals not on a qualifying team also advance to the state meet.

The Desert Vista girls are performing well right now after winning the Tempe City meet on Thursday and then competing at the Mt. SAC Invite in California on Saturday where the Thunder finished 11th in the elite team sweepstakes race.

Dani Jones won the Tempe event with Brittany Tretbar third and Jenna Maack was fourth.

At the Mt. SAC, the Thunder finished 27th overall out of 366 teams as Jones set a PR at 18:05 and Maack was next at 18:53.

The girls state tournament is Friday and Saturday at Aguila Golf Course in Laveen.

Neither local team qualified but Mountain Pointe’s Madi Woodward and Lauren Blumears and Desert Vista’s Geraldine Torrellas qualified as individuals.

The boys state tournament is Monday and Tuesday of next week and both teams qualified for Aguila.

The annual Dig Pink event is Thursday at Desert Vista with Mountain Pointe coming in needing a victory and is a must-see event.

The freshman game is at 4 p.m. with the varsity match starting around 6 p.m.

Just go. Trust me.

It is a great event.

The Horizon Honors team has four matches left, including a long trip to Eloy today, and probably has to win out to have a chance to make the final 16 spots for the Division IV tournament. The Eagles sit at No. 22 and asking to jump six teams to make the field seems unlikely.

The season is down to a few meets as the Tempe City meet is Wednesday and Thursday at the Last Chance meet is Saturday.

The individuals are done tapering off and now trying to peak for the state meet on Nov. 2 and 3.

The regular season has one more game with Mountain Pointe taking on Westwood and Desert Vista traveling to Chandler in one of the bigger games of the week.

The playoffs start the following week with a four-week run to the state title.
