Mike Arredondo told himself that once he decided on a destination he wouldn't change his mind.

But then 420 miles away a fifth-year senior linebacker at New Mexico walked into the coach's office and said he wasn't going to play in the fall.

The domino effect led to first-year New Mexico coach Bob Davie extending an offer late Monday afternoon to the Desert Vista linebacker.

"All along I kind of saw myself in New Mexico," Arredondo said. "I loved it. When I got back, I told my parents I would have committed on the spot if they offered on my visit. They said they were only going to offer two linebackers and didn't have any spots."

That was until Monday when a Lobo linebacker decided he had enough.

It made for a difficult call to Northern Arizona coach Jerome Souers, who gave Arredondo his first offer and where the latter gave his verbal commitment on Jan. 22.

"I told myself I'd never de-commit," Arredondo said. "It was the biggest decision of my life. I try not to look at it as a business but really that is what it is."

The national signing period begins on Wednesday.
