The Desert Vista volleyball team should be entering the state tournament as the No. 1 seed.

With two matches left, they had a significant lead over No. 2 Gilbert in the power rankings.

It begs the question, how does this year's squad compare to the 2007 Thunder team that won the state title?

"They're real similar," Desert Vista coach then and now Ryan Tolman said. "The state championship team played with a lot of emotion. It was a very experienced team like this one is.

"There weren't many holes on that team just like this one. We will see if we can duplicate it."

Brophy coach Tony Oldani, whose team held the No. 1 spot until the Thunder swept the Broncos, who were without four players at the time, thinks Desert Vista has a great shot.

“To me they have better ball control than most teams in the state, they have more athletes than most teams in state,” he said. “It is their state to win.”
