Brent Miller has returned home.
The 2003 Desert Vista graduate is now part of the Thunder coaching staff and a teacher at the school.
Miller, 26, is the tight end coach and a special education teacher.
After being ranked as the fifth overall prospect in Arizona, Miller went on to play at Arizona State with his brother, Zach, and finished with 43 career receptions for 526 yards and five touchdowns.
Desert Vista coach Dan Hinds, who coached Miller, already likes what he has seen from the newest member of this staff.
"He has a good eye for things," Hinds said. "He'll catch something and ask if I noticed it. He is going to fit right in."
That was about the most interesting news to come out the Thunder's scrimmage against Chaparral on Wednesday night.
The other was watching Chaparral wide receiver Davonte Neal, a former Ahwatukee resident who lived in the DV border, show why he is a man among boys just about every time he steps on a high school field.
He scored three times, the final one on a wide receiver screen, where he made everyone else seem like they were stuck in fly paper.
Just unbelievably quick and shifty.
When both teams had first teamers in Chaparral, which didn't seem to have as many big bodied athletes as usual, scored three times to DV's zero. Overall all it was 4-3 Chaparral.
Desert Vista's Matt Smith and Kaleb Germinaro, a pair of wide receivers, showed some big-play ability.
Hinds took the results for what they were - a scrimmage.
"We came out of it healthy and that is what matters most," said Hinds, who lost linebacker/running back Mike Arredondo in last year's scrimmage for five weeks of the regular season because of knee injury in a scrimmage.
"We didn't come out worried about trying to score a bunch of touchdowns. We just wanted to get some things worked out and we did that. We also found out we have some things we need to work on."
On the other side of the Foothills, Mountain Pointe heads up to Camp Tontozona this weekend to get some team building in while being able to hit with full pads.
The Pride scrimmage's against Phoenix North is next week at home.
