Reasonable people will agree that all countries should not have easy access to nuclear and chemical weapons.

However, if we accept gun lobby logic for easy individual access to assault weapons, then easy access to weapons of mass destruction (WMDs) for all countries would make just as much sense, right? Let’s see:

• All nations have a right to defend themselves. Some countries have WMDs, so in order to be able to defend themselves, countries without these weapons should be allowed and encouraged to have them, too.

• A WMD-armed world is a polite and peaceful world. No country would misbehave in this WMD-armed world, because all other countries have the ability to use the same WMDs to retaliate.

• WMDs are just national self-defense tools. They are inanimate objects and so cannot harm anyone by themselves.

• Why should law-abiding countries without WMDs be denied them? International bans and non-proliferation agreements are unfair and burdensome for these law-abiding “have not” countries.

• If we deny or discourage good countries from having WMDs, then the only countries that will acquire them are bad ones. There will then not be enough good countries with WMDs to stop all the bad ones with WMDs.

• Banning WMDs will not stop bad countries from acquiring and using them.

• WMD manufacturers add value to the international economy and create jobs. More and more WMDs are good for the global economy.

• No other country should feel intimidated or threatened by countries trying to develop WMDs or displaying the ones they already have. They are only exercising their rights.

• Some tread upon countries will need WMDs to overthrow the United Nations when it becomes a tyrannical international overlord.

• If the people of some countries become WMD victims, it is a price worth paying for freedom.

If these arguments do not convince you that all countries should have easy access to atomic and chemical weapons, then please think very hard if they really make any more sense to defend easy individual access to assault rifles and other high capacity firearms.
