My complements to the artist who did the cartoon (Opinion page of the Jan. 13 edition of the AFN) of our Founding Fathers on the wording of the Second Amendment — it was right on target. That cartoon speaks volumes about what has happened to the original intent of the amendment over the course of history.
I quote here the actual wording of the Second Amendment: “A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.” As ratified by the States and authenticated by Thomas Jefferson, Secretary of State.
If I understand the origins of the Second Amendment it was intended to guard individuals against repressive government, to reserve the right to form a militia, and to defend one’s self. But guess what, we live in an age of predator drones and laser guided munitions. The Bushmaster.223 is not a reasonable defense from the government, nor is it a realistic form of self defense while walking to your car. I don’t think anyone advocates the Second Amendment right for hunting deer with an automatic weapon.
Bottom line: I have a difficult time imaging the rationale for individual ownership of a weapon designed for mass killing of humans.
