Second Amendment was put in place to defend ourselves against a tyrannical government

It is astonishing to me that a self-professed “retired consulting engineer” could not understand that Professor John Lott’s hypothesis of a 3-percent-per-1-percent relationship between gun ownership and crime rate reduction is a LOGARITHMIC function.

Thus, a 100 percent increase in gun ownership would decrease crime to 4.75 percent of the initial value, whatever that initial crime rate might have been.

But, of course, that “retired consulting engineer” is the one-and-the-same Ahwatukee marauder who name-called me as a “Free Lunch Patriot” ... no matter that my engineering has resulted in far more enemy-combatant deaths than any single soldier can possibly conceive of. Add the engineering designs I did to create the capability to put two-way-radio communication inside the helmets of every soldier and I feel that I have more than done my required duty to country.

But the real reason for my writing is to applaud the commentary of Clifford M. Reid Jr. (“It’s important we remember why the Second Amendment was included in the Constitution,” Jan. 13, AFN) regarding why we have the Second Amendment, and to add my comments.

The Second Amendment was put there plain and simply to ensure our ability to defend ourselves against a tyrannical government ... it DID NOT have anything to do with our ability to go hunting or target plinking.

Nor does the Second Amendment have anything to do with guns only in the hands of the kind of “militia” that is viewed by the left to mean National Guard or some military unit controlled by the government.

I urge everyone to refer to, and read completely, both websites, and From whence come the following quotations:

“The word ‘militia’ is a Latin abstract noun, meaning ‘military service,’ not an ‘armed group’ (with the connotation of plurality), and that is the way the Latin-literate Founders used it. The (Latin) collective term, meaning ‘army’ or ‘soldiery’ was ‘volgus militum.’”

“The most foolish mistake we could possibly make would be to permit the conquered Eastern peoples to have arms. History teaches that all conquerors who have allowed their subject races to carry arms have prepared their own downfall by doing so. Indeed I would go so far as to say that the underdog is a sine qua non for the overthrow of any sovereignty. So let’s not have any native militia or police. German troops alone will bear the sole responsibility for the maintenance of law and order.” — Adolf Hitler, April 11, 1942.

Then there’s the classic quotation of Thomas Jefferson: “And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.”

Thus, you can understand why our politicians want gun confiscation.

Those on the left keep reciting, “Elections have consequences.” They certainly do.
