There is no short answer to the question — one which is asked by almost every gun control advocate in the U.S.

Background checks are already being done by the thousands every year. The gun control supporters use every gun-related crisis to their advantage by raising a huge ruckus about the lack of, or inadequacy of, such checks and the need for semi-automatic weapons. According to the FBI, more than 100 million background checks have been made in the last decade, leading to more than 700,000 denials (fbi.gov).

Gun control supporters say the police should have any weapon they need to protect us, and that’s right on target. However, in the event of a home invasion, mugging, or a car-jacking, the police won’t be there to help, and they acknowledge that fact. So we must defend ourselves to the best of our ability. Having a semi-automatic weapon is the best we can do under today’s laws. If you have the time, you may want to compare crime statistics in those states with concealed to carry laws to those without them. In almost all cases, you’ll find the crime rate in the concealed to carry states is much lower than those without ‘em.

Our worst mass murder cases have always happened in gun-free zones. Schools, college campuses, theaters, post offices and the like. The perpetrator always knows there will be no resistance. After committing his heinous act, he frequently commits suicide. Usually a sure sign the “perp” was mentally unbalanced.

There are about 24,000 gun control laws on the books right now. Why do we need more? The answer ... politics. The politics of the few who want to control our nation for their own aggrandizement. When the people have no way to fight back, the dictators take over with no opposition. That’s one of the reasons the Second Amendment exists. It’s there to protect the citizen from its elected government. Sad to say, our own government is now our worst enemy. And, I say that with a tear in the eye.

One of the first things a totalitarian government does is to take away the firearms of the citizens. It happened in Bolshevik Russia, in Nazi Germany, in Fascist Italy, in Communist China and Communist Cuba, and so on.

When you have time, you should read George Washington’s first farewell address. It’s a message of great prescience. Then review the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. Only a subversive would disagree with the message in any of them.
