A 3-week-old girl has been hospitalized with life-threatening injuries after police say the baby's father admitted to poking her in the eye before dropping her, according to Chandler police.
Brian Hopf was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of child abuse and is being held in a Maricopa County jail on $500,000 bond.
Police arrested Hopf soon after the girl was admitted to a local hospital with serious injuries that include multiple skull fractures, swelling to her brain, broken ribs and other trauma to her body, police said.
According to police, Hopf told investigators that while giving the baby milk about 4 a.m. Monday, he accidentally poked her in the eye, which caused her to start crying. Hopf said as he was taking the baby to her crib, he tripped, hit the baby's head on a door jamb and dropped her, according to Sgt. Joe Favazzo, a spokesman for Chandler police.
Later that morning, the baby's mother found the child unresponsive in the crib and they took her to the hospital, Favazzo said.
When hospital personnel observed the baby, they saw signs that the child had been abused and called police, Favazzo said.
"The child's injuries were not accidental," Favazzo said.
