Police arrested a 20-year-old man on suspicion of murder in the death of a Chandler woman who managed a mini-mart, where her body was found Friday morning at an east Phoenix apartment complex.

Police have yet to release the man's name. He lives in the complex, police said.

The body of Nisai Kang, 34, was discovered about 8 a.m. inside the store by a resident at The Peaks of Papago Park, 815 N. 52nd St.

Police believe she was working in the store by herself when she was brutally attacked and killed, according to Phoenix police Sgt. Andy Hill.

"It was horrific," Hill said, adding that more charges are pending.

Police initially said the woman had been shot, but later backed off on naming the cause of death. The motive was unclear.

Witnesses said they saw a man leaving the store carrying some property. He was later identified as the man police arrested.

Kang and her husband began leasing the store about three months ago, and the woman had not reported any problems while operating it, said Karen Anthens, manager of the 768-unit complex.
