Two auto repair businesses in the Sun Cities have made the 2011 list of “Top Shops,” AAA’s Approved Auto Repair award that recognizes companies that provide customers with “honest, reliable and quality service.”

The award, now in its 10th year, honored 32 auto repair facilities across Arizona Tuesday, including Mike’s Sun City Union, Sun Cities Tire & Auto in Sun City West and Bell Tire & Auto Service in Glendale.

“Our AAR program identifies trusted auto repair facilities for our members, and the Top Shop award recognizes the best of those shops,” said Don Nunnari, vice president of membership products and services for AAA Arizona. “We’re proud to recognize new and returning winners this year, especially shops who have received this honor for a decade.”

“I’m kind of proud of it,” said Wally Moreland, who owns Sun Cities Tire & Auto with his wife Cathy.

The nine-time winner said he doesn’t expect the award to increase business. “I don’t look at it as bringing in customers, I look at it (for) the customers I already have, to put them at peace.”

Moreland stayed behind and worked Tuesday while Cathy picked up their plaque at the Pointe Tapatio Resort in Phoenix during the awards and luncheon banquet.

Mike Johnson of Mike’s Sun City Union said the award provides a business with “credibility. It’s so stringent to get in. They check your equipment, make sure you can do everything. You’ve got to have 90 percent of your customers happy.”

The Top Shop award recipients must maintain customer surveys with at least a 90 percent approval rating, remain actively involved in the community through service groups and charities and uphold an exemplary business reputation.

Johnson said he belongs to the Elks and coaches Pop Warner football. “You have to be involved in the community. We have nine years running winning this contest,” he said, adding that the AAA honor is a “very, very prestigious award.”
