It can’t hurt to kick off the school year with some positive reinforcement about reading, and that should be available in spades at Girls Night Out, a free event for teen readers featuring No. 1 New York Times bestselling author Aprilynne Pike and fellow writers Suzanne Young and C.J. Hill.

The trio of female authors will share three teen sci-fi novels with the crowd and take questions.

In Pike’s “Earthbound,” the sole survivor of the plane crash discovers she alone holds the key to stopping an evil society that manipulates global events for its own shadowy purposes. Young is the author of “The Program,” about a worldwide teen suicide epidemic and the memory-erasing treatment developed to cure it. In Hill’s “Erasing Time,” twins travel into the future to stop an evil government from using a time machine.

All three writers are Arizona residents.
