You may soon spot something other than hawks and vultures in the sky near the Superstition Mountains.

Tiny aircraft will take to the skies for the Gunsmoke 2013 Radio Control Scale Model Aircraft Contest.

The annual event tests the planes that modelers have spent hundreds of hours building. It’s the qualifier event for the Arizona Model Aviators Radio Control Club.

Models that meet the strict requirements of scale fidelity will be eligible to move on to competition at the national level.

The event is open to the public. Static judging of the models will take place 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, March 1. Flight rounds are 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 2, and Sunday, March 3.

Food concessions are available Saturday and Sunday for spectators. Admission is free, but there is a parking fee of $6 per vehicle.

The event is held at Superstition Air Park, approximately 1/2 mile north of Brown Road on Meridian Road in Apache Junction. Look for signs directing drivers to the spot.
