The Sun City Visitors Center’s Heart Health Expo Wednesday morning drew a crowd to the Sundial Recreation Center in celebration of February’s American Heart Month.
Sun Citians Mary and Floyd Young enjoyed walking through the booths to check out products they see in advertisements and to see what’s new.
“I like it,” Mary Young said. “You get to meet a lot of different people, too.”
The event featured more than 100 vendors — ranging from medical companies to banks and senior living communities — and free blood pressure checks, along with raffles and drawings. Representatives from Mollen Clinic administered H1N1, flu and pneumonia shots.
Mary Young was interested in looking at items that might help her after a recent heart surgery, while her husband, Floyd, wanted to look at solar products and even tested out the moveable TEMPUR-Pedic bed on display at the Bedmart mattress booth.
“I’m glad they do this,” Mary Young said.
Event attendees stopped by the CaptionCall booth to take a look at a special phone, similar to closed-captioned television, that transcribes phone calls for people with hearing loss, said product manager Robert Puzey.
About 10 percent of Americans have hearing loss, which tends to show up as people age, Puzey said. One of the biggest complaints that comes along with that is not being able to hear over the phone.
“CaptionCall solves that problem,” Puzey said.
The CaptionCall phone quickly transcribes what the person on the other end of the phone is saying and shows the words on the phone’s screen.
Visitors Center director Paul Herrmann was pleased with the event turnout and said vendors also appreciated the crowds.
“It’s excellent; the numbers have been good so far,” Herrmann said.
