An Arizona State University student from Ahwatukee Foothills has won a prestigious $20,000 Boren Scholarship, funded by the National Security Education Program, to study in areas of the world that are critical to the interests of the United States.
Jonathan Sankman, a senior in biology with a minor in East Asian languages, who graduated from Mountain Pointe High School, will study Japanese and biomedical science at Kyushu University in Japan next year.
He is interested in the regenerative medical research being done in Japan, as that is his future career goal.
The program is designed to develop the national capacity to understand foreign cultures, strengthen U.S. economic competitiveness and enhance international cooperation and security.
Ten ASU students won the awards. Sankman is enrolled in Barrett, The Honors College.
