A 23-year-old Mesa man accused of beating his girlfriend's 3-year-old son to death for soiling his pants was charged with one count of first-degree murder on Monday.

Jorge Alberto Busso Jr. was arrested on Dec. 3 on suspicion of three counts of felony child abuse after staff at Banner Desert Medical Center reported the boy's severe head injuries and bruises on his body to police.

Busso also was charged with three counts of felony child abuse on suspicion of causing a head injury to the child, causing bruises to his body and failing to seek medical care for the child, according to information from the Maricopa County Attorney's Office.

The boy was pronounced dead 10:39 p.m. Sunday at Phoenix Children's Hospital, where he had been taken for emergency surgery, according to Mesa police.

Busso, an illegal immigrant from Mexico who was deported in 2008 for a drug-related offense, told police he beat the child with a belt across his back, arms and buttocks and shoved him into a corner, knocking his head into the wall, according to police. He told police he later heard a "thud" in the kitchen, and when he went to see what happened,

When the boy's mother returned home from work, she discovered the boy lying in bed unresponsive and called 911. She initially was uncooperative with police.

It was not known at this time whether charges against the child's mother in connection to the boy's death are being considered at this time.
