In our wi-fi world of planes, trains and automobiles, travel is taken for granted; in days gone by, it was considered a prerequisite for a well-rounded education. It not only broadened the mind, but also deepened one’s experience and knowledge of the world. That vintage wisdom holds true today, making events like the Gilbert Global Village Festival on Saturday a red-letter day.

This free event, held on the lawn at the Gilbert Civic Center, gives you the chance to experience the crafts, music, food, religion and costumes of far-flung lands even though you may not have the shekels to spend a year backpacking through Europe or traversing the African hinterlands.

In addition to on-going live entertainment, there will be an international bazaar, a variety of ethnic food booths, a children’s parade of nations and “Creation Nation Station,” where kids can do hands-on activities to learn the history, art, music and science of other cultures. There will also be an Expore-A-Nation area where attendees of all ages can learn specific cultural facts like what a didgeridoo is or how to correctly greet someone in China. Handmade art from international artists will also be on display on the “Avenue of Arts,” where there will be live visual art demonstrations.
