Chandler-based Baseball Player University, an instructional baseball show aimed at bringing professional-level training to all players, recently announced a partnership with baseball giant Louisville Slugger ahead of the launch of its fourth season.
Louisville Slugger, the official bat of Major League Baseball and one of the names synonymous in baseball for 130 years, will sponsor Baseball Player University’s (BPU) “Drop the Boom” segment, where athletes upload their best swings to the BPU web site, bputv.com. The best hits will be selected weekly to win a Louisville Slugger bat.
“When you think of Louisville Slugger, you think baseball,” said Jeff Forney, BPU founder and host. “We’ve worked hard to become a credible, quality resource for baseball athletes, and are proud to use their products as we train players across America.”
Forney, a former major league and college coach, is joined by former big leaguers teaching their areas of expertise, including: Delino DeShields (infield), Kelly Stinnett (catching), Dave Burba (pitching), Tim Nicely (hitting) and Brad Holland (scouting).
The BPU show includes segments on injury prevention, fitness, nutrition and training tips for athletes and coaches, as well as tips for parents working with players of all ages.
The first episode of the fourth season debuts June 7.
“It started on a napkin and now we’re on season No. 4,” Forney said. “I love the game and this is my way to give back to it.
“We’ve received a lot of positive feedback on the tips and the positive message of the show.”
BPU will celebrate the start of its fourth season with “opening day” festivities from 9 a.m. to noon June 7 at Dr. AJ Chandler Park in downtown Chandler. The celebration will operate like a mini-clinic, where all ages can test their pitching speed, evaluate their swing with instant video replay, improve their agility and check out a splash ball station to keep cool.
The event is free and open to the public, with food and drinks for purchase, including hot dogs from local favorite, Pittsburgh Willy’s, ice cream treats and more. The event is sponsored by the Downtown Chandler Community Partnership.
“I’ve been through a lot of opening days in my life, playing ball, and this will be an opening day for the show,” Forney said. “We’re basically going to bring the show live to downtown (sans the cameras). It’s going to be great.”
Baseball Player University TV airs weekly on the FOX Sports regional networks on the West Coast and MASN along the eastern seaboard. Locally, the show will air at 2 p.m. June 7 on FOX Sports Arizona.
