The Ahwatukee Bowl is in line for a new name that corresponds with 9/11.

The game falls on Friday, Sept. 9 this year as Mountain Pointe hosts Desert Vista, and the two schools have come together to help remember those who died as this year marks 10 years since the tragic event.

The name has been changed to the Ahwatukee Memorial Bowl.

Fans will be invited to attend the pregame show and participate in the halftime show.

Here are some of the things the evening is scheduled to include:

• The Mountain Pointe and Desert Vista choirs will combine to sing the national anthem.

• There will be honorary captains from the Phoenix fire and police departments for the coin toss.

• Halftime activities will include a special program of remembrance, a moment of silence, singing of "America the Beautiful" and fireworks.

• Members of the U.S. Army, U.S. Marines, U.S. Navy and U.S. Air Force will be guests on the sidelines.

• The student sections will be asked to wear red, white and blue instead of the traditional school colors.

• The teams might possibly wear special uniforms or special spirit items if enough money can be raised. For more information and to make donations, contact Mountain Pointe assistant principal Patricia Goolsby at (480) 706-7240.

• Speciality items will be sold afterward, and donations will be collected for the groups honored during the evening.

• All police officers, firefighters, ambulance drivers/paramedics and military personnel will receive free admission to the game with proper ID.

It definitely makes it the most unique Ahwatukee Bowl in the 15-year history of the game.
