The suspect police say is responsible for leading officers on a chase that went from Chandler to Gilbert before he crashed into another vehicle, killing an 11-year-old Chandler boy, is facing charges of first-degree murder and aggravated assault-related charges.
David Wiggins, 30, of Chandler, was released from a local hospital on Wednesday and booked into Maricopa County’s Fourth Avenue Jail in Phoenix. He was seriously injured in a crash that left Alexander Katsaros dead and the boy’s father, Gregory Katsaros, and younger brother Christopher seriously injured on Oct. 8.
Det. Seth Tyler, a Chandler police spokesman, said some kind of impairment is believed to have played a role in the crash.
Police say Wiggins was driving a Toyota MR2 that crashed into the side of a Kia driven by Katsaros shortly after 2 a.m. at the intersection of McQueen and Warner roads after Wiggins’ vehicle ran a red light at that intersection a second time as he was eluding police in a Gilbert neighborhood along South Islands Drive. There, police stopped the chase for safety reasons due to the residential environment.
Tyler said it’s believed that Katsaros, a chiropractor, was out on a call and had his sons with him because his wife was out of town at the time.
A Chandler police officer passing through the parking lot of the Iguana Mac’s bar first began following Wiggins’ vehicle about 2 a.m. after the officer noticed signs of impairment near Alma School and Knox roads.
Wiggins vehicle sped off and the officer, who was in an unmarked car, called for a marked vehicle to assist in the pursuit that eventually led to McQueen Road.
After Wiggins’ vehicle exited South Islands Drive back onto McQueen Road, an officer who was at Mesquite High School reported that she heard a crash.
Wiggins’ vehicle had struck the rear axel of Katsaros’ car, close to where the brothers were sitting within.
Christopher Katsaros’ condition is not known at this time. Tyler said Gregory Katsaros has been released from the hospital.
