The colorful and creative world of Dr. Seuss is coming to Kyrene Middle School.

Students from across the district will be performing "Seussical Jr.," a performance based on the Broadway musical that captures the plots of several of the late author's most well-known works.

There will be two performances next week, on Tuesday, June 28, and Wednesday, June 29, at 7 p.m.

One of the story lines revolves around Horton and his quest to save the world of the Whos. At the same time he must protect an egg that belongs to Mayzie La Bird.

Other characters include the Cat in the Hat, Yertle the Turtle and the Grinch.

"It's a fun and lively musical," said Megan Fisher, 13, who plays Horton the Elephant. "Our generation responds well to music. We have picked up the music and lyrics very quickly."

Over 40 students are involved in the production, which is headed by director and choreographer Jenefer Miller.

Overall, they will have just five short weeks from start to opening night.

"Mrs. Miller has a very creative mind when it comes to choreography," said Payson Johnson, who plays the Cat in the Hat. "You can learn lots of things when working on something like this. It's a play about thinking."

For some of the students, this will not be the first time they have performed for a Kyrene-sponsored summer performance.

"I've done this for a few years and I think we all work really well together and it's a fun cast," said Jenna Swink, Altadeña Middle School student. "You make good friends and learn teamwork. It makes you want to work on the lines and choreography at home."

The performance takes pieces from "Green Eggs and Ham," "Horton Hatches the Egg," and "How the Grinch Stole Christmas."

"Seussical Jr." is a one-act play that runs for approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes.

Tickets can be purchased at the door on Tuesday and Wednesday at Kyrene Middle School, 1050 E. Carver Road in Tempe.
