Ahwatukee Foothills neighbors are getting together this weekend to support one of their own at a Bingo with the Stars event May 15, to benefit a mother of two who is fighting cancer.
Following an April 8 article in the Ahwatukee Foothills News about Carola Jacobson, Ahwatukee resident Tom Pattons decided something needed to be done.
"I saw the article and it was one of those things that just hit me," Pattons said. "I don't know her, I've never met her. This is just something I wanted to do."
Pattons and Jacobson's friend, Denise Cote, have been working together to organize the event. It will be a family friendly night with hot dogs, raffle prizes, bingo and local baseball players.
Author and speaker Billy Staples will speak and be guest emcee for the event.
Most of the proceeds will go to helping Jacobson and a smaller portion will go toward Major League Baseball Alumni.
"The bulk of everything will be going to Carola because she needs the money - that's how it works," Pattons said. "We're just trying to get as many people there as we can."
Tickets for the event are $10 and can be purchased online at http://goteamcarola.ticketbud.com. The event will go from 4 p.m. to about 7 p.m. at Mountain Park Community Church, 2408 E. Pecos Road.
Jacobson was diagnosed with Stage 2 breast cancer in 2008. At that time she made major life and diet changes and was able to fight it off. However, in 2010 the cancer returned much worse than before. Now she has spots on her lungs, her bones and a fairly large tumor on her spine that makes it difficult and dangerous to get around. Once an avid runner and busy real estate agent, now Jacobson is forced to stay home and in bed.
"I'd do it for anyone in this scenario," Patton said. "We're all here to help each other. I haven't even met the lady but it's just one of those things you feel obligated to do. It's the same price as going to the movies but you can come here and have fun for the night and help someone out in the mean time."
