The Tempe Elementary School District will consider Wednesday night promoting associate superintendent Chris Busch to replace departing Superintendent Arthur Tate.

Busch is a 30-year veteran educator, with 23 years of experience in the Tempe Elementary district. She currently serves as the district's associate superintendent, as well as the district's executive director of human resources.

Tate is leaving the district to lead a school district in the Midwest and will depart June 30. The board still needs to accept his resignation. That is on the agenda for Wednesday night.

First, however, the governing board is scheduled to discuss Busch's appointment during an executive session at 6 p.m. in the administration office, 3205 S. Rural Road, Tempe. The board could vote on accepting Tate's resignation, and appointing Busch, during the regular meeting, which begins at 7 p.m.

If the board approves Busch as superintendent, the next step would be to negotiate a contract. Tate is being paid $156,685 this year, which includes a furlough day.

During her career, Busch has served as a speech-pathologist, teacher, assistant principal and principal, as well as executive director of human resources and associate superintendent.

Besides needing a new leader, the Tempe district is looking at closing schools next year. A community committee has proposed merging four elementary schools into two and closing McKemy Middle School, which has been met with strong parent opposition.

The East Valley will see several superintendent changes next school year. Tempe Union High School District Superintendent Steve Adolph will retire June 30. The district is still seeking a replacement.

Queen Creek Unified School District's governing board recently hired Tom Lindsey, the district's assistant superintendent for human resources and curriculum, to replace retiring Superintendent James Murlless.
