Phoenix police have identified a 59-year-old man who died around the time he drove his pickup truck into a light pole at 48th Street and Piedmont Road in Ahwatukee Foothills Wednesday afternoon as Danny Lee Piwowarczyk.
"Investigators are waiting for the Medical Examiner's report to help determine if a medical condition may have played a role in the collision," according to Trent Crump, Phoenix Police Department spokesman.
Sgt. Dave Reginato said the driver was seen hitting a curb just before he slammed the front of his green Toyota Tacoma into a pole on the northeast corner of the intersection around 4 p.m. Police administered first aid upon arriving at the scene. The victim was transported to Tempe St. Luke's Hospital, Reginato said.
So far, it's unclear whether a medical emergency caused the man to crash his truck, or if he died from injuries sustained in the accident, he said. Check back with www.ahwatukee.com for updates.
