The latest piece of extortion by the Republican House over the budget is getting scathing reviews all across the political spectrum. While it easy to blame the tea party for this nonsense the fact is that a substantial portion of the American electorate stubbornly cling to the notion that the intransigence it takes to ruin the nation will somehow save it. Although if you ask them by what practical mechanism is the Republic saved the hemming and hawing begin and finally end in an empty and vacuous rhetoric about freedom and the Constitution interleaved with anti-Obama hate speech. Specifics are hard to come by.

The President and the Democrats are powerless to stop the House Republicans from taking the American people and economy hostages over the budget — not without paying their ransom and inviting government by extortion as the model for future negotiations. The Tea Party challenge to the President and the Democrats is, “Stand and deliver, or I shall kill you, and then you will be a murderer!”. That a small plurality of ill-informed voters will reward these “highwaymen” and punish cooler and wiser heads within the Republican Party is at the root of this dangerous farce. One Republican governor has warned his compatriots not to become the “Party of Stupid”. It appears his warning went unheeded.
