The celebrated singing monks of Tibet’s Drepung Loseling Monastery have been at Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts the past few days, performing ancient temple music and dances, hosting lectures and creating a painting with millions of grains of sand painstakingly laid to form a mandala, or sacred circle.

The monks, who have performed with Paul Simon, Natalie Merchant, Patti Smith and the Beastie Boys, give a free presentation on “Opening Your Heart” 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday. A free closing ceremony around the sand painting, which will be ritualistically destroyed as a metaphor for the impermanence of life, takes place 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.

>> See the mandala sand painting noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts, 7380 E. Second St. Free. (480) 994-2787 or scottsdaleperformingarts.org.
