Street rhythms of Brazil and Cuba fuse with blues, jazz and funk when Arizona’s Bata Ire brings Afro-Cuban and Afro-Brazilian music to Surprise at 3 p.m. Feb. 13.

The concert is part of the West Valley Arts Council’s Backyard Concert Series in Marley Park, 13243 N. Founders Park Blvd. General admission lawn seating for the outdoor concert is $5 for adults and $2 for students.

Steeped in tradition and musical experience, Bata Ire (pronounced: bah-tah EE-ray) borrows from the ancient repertoire of Bata, Rumba, Iyesa, Makuta, Samba, Batucada and countless other traditions. Fronted by the voice of Lauren Winston, and bandleader and percussionist Emilio Caruso, this seven-piece ensemble features Cuban and Brazilian percussion coupled with funky guitar, bass and vibraphone. The group performs original songs and its own arrangements showcasing a virtuosic talent and deeply rooted spirit.

Bata Ire consists of Caruso (percussion, vocals), Winston (lead vocals), Jesse Joaquin Parker (vibraphone, congas, bata, percussion), Erik Teichmann (drumset, percussion, bata), Rich Kniss (electric guitar, percussion, vocals), Marcus Weeden (bass, vocals) and Shane Carillo (bata, congas, percussion). To learn about the ensemble, visit www.bataire.com.

The West Valley Arts Council’s monthly Backyard Concert Series features nationally known artists and home-grown talent in a relaxed, outdoor atmosphere. Minimal seating is provided and patrons are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets. No alcohol, glass containers or pets are allowed. Wine, beer and bottled water are available for purchase.

For information, call the West Valley Arts Council at 623-935-6384 or visit www.westvalleyarts.org. Tickets are also available for purchase at the gate 30 minutes prior to the event.
