To no one’s surprise Gerell Robinson found his way to his NFL.

The former Desert Vista quarterback signed with the Denver Broncos as a non-drafted free agent after a great senior year as a wide receiver at Arizona State.

He is getting his first taste of NFL training camp with a certain No. 18 playing quarterback.

Having Peyton Manning as your quarterback - along with former ASU quarterback Brock Osweiler in camp with you - isn’t a bad landing place.

“There was no secret that Gerell was going to be athletic enough to play at that level,” Desert Vista coach Dan Hinds said. “He matured physically and he is one of those extremely talented kids. As long as he got on the right track and made the right decisions you knew he was going to find himself in the NFL someday.”

Robinson transferred from Desert Vista to Hamilton after his sophomore year and flourished as a play-maker in the Hamilton offense.

He went on to have a great year with the Sun Devils as a senior with 77 catches for 1,397 yards and seven touchdowns.

While it wasn’t enough to get drafted, he definitely caught the scout’s eyes with his size (6-foot-4, 222 pounds) and athleticism.

Robinson was disappointed, but it doesn’t matter now that he is in camp.

“As everyone goes through the process, you have to be politically correct and say that you don’t mind which team drafts you,” Robinson told devilsdigest.com in April. “And when you get drafted you’re happy to go to the team that wants you. But the one team I always wanted to go to was the Denver Broncos.

“I always liked the team and I had a good conversation with Mr. Elway when he came to the school, as well as with their GM and receivers coach. I got to talk to them when they worked out Brock and I got a better understanding about them and how much they liked me. I was talking to them even before they worked out Brock. But obviously me being there in all of his workouts helped me get noticed by the Broncos.

“I’ll take that package deal.”
