The Ahwatukee Foothills Family YMCA is hosting a Trunk or Treat event this Friday. The parking lot will be full of cars with decorated trunks, celebrating Halloween early.
Although the event is well before Halloween itself, organizers felt that since Halloween is on a weekday this year, they would offer a weekend time to allow local youth to get dressed up in their costumes and go from car to car, or trunk to trunk in this case, to collect candy.
This sounds like a great contest and would be a great thing for all you creative people out there.
The event is free to trunk-or-treaters as well as trunk designers (the YMCA just asks that you show up at 6 p.m. to find a spot and get set up. They also ask that you bring a large bag of candy to donate).
Not only is it the largest trick-or-treating event in Ahwatukee Foothills, it is a great time for kids, senior executive director of the YMCA Connie Nelson-Askew assures me, because they get free candy. But for those who want to decorate trunks, there will be judging and prizes for the best and most creative trunks.
"It's an event that brings the whole family together," Nelson-Askew said.
The event is sponsored by Dr. Ken Danyluk from Team Orthodontics and Dr. John Culp of Jungle Roots Children's Dentistry, who dress up and get involved with costume contest judging.
Another important aspect of the event is that there will be a donation area for the YMCA's outreach program, the Strong Kids Campaign, which helps pays tuition for kids and classes, such as drowning prevention.
The Y currently have a shortfall of about $15,000 of its total projection of $144,000, Nelson-Askew said.
They also fund a senior program, in which they drive those who no longer can around to their doctor's appointment, or wherever they need to be.
"It is basically a program to help seniors maintain living in their own homes," Nelson-Askew said.
The Trunk or Treat event takes place from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Oct. 21. To find out more, or to reserve a parking spot, call the YMCA, 1030 E. Liberty Lane, at (480) 759-6762.
