Anna Martinez had been living in a three-bedroom home with no air conditioning and a swamp cooler in one room.

During the hot months, that room was where Martinez, 25, and her two daughters, Jadah and Lilah, did almost everything.

“It was just so hot that we lived out of it because other parts of the house were just too warm to be in,” she said.

But they don’t have to stay in one room any longer.

The family on Saturday received the keys to their new two-story house in Glendale from Habitat for Humanity Central Arizona.

“I’m just really blessed and thankful to be here,” Martinez said during the dedication.

Roger Schwierjohn, president and CEO of Habitat for Humanity Central Arizona, said the Martinez’ home is the latest house to be completed in the organization’s Palmaire subdivision near downtown Glendale. Three remaining houses are expected to be finished soon.

By the end of this year, the organization will have built 51 houses.

Each home takes approximately 20 to 22 weeks with the efforts of volunteers, including employees from Wells Fargo Bank.

The Wells Fargo Housing Foundation recently gave a $35,000 grant to Habitat for Humanity in support of affordable housing to Phoenix-area low-income families.

Michael Riley, Metro Phoenix West regional president, said he’s pleased with the contribution Habitat has made to improve lives. “There were so many people who hammered in the nails and put sweat into the work for this home,” he said. “We are committed to improving the quality of life and having more home ownership, even in this economy.”

Martinez said she applied for a Habitat home last year but never expected to be a recipient this soon. She was impressed with all of the volunteers and their hard work.

“This really makes me happy and lets me know how much people care about you,” Martinez said.
