Scott Smith, Greg Stanton

This video capture shows Mesa Mayor Scott Smith, left, and Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton, right, having fun recreating the opening of the 1970s sitcom "Laverne and Shirley." The cleverly edited sketch, produced by the Arizona Capitol Times, was created after the was voted by Capitol Times readers as the top Republican and Democratic elected officials in the Valley.

Arizona’s best politicians are ... two guys dancing like they’re Laverne and Shirley?

Yes, Mesa’s Scott Smith and Phoenix’s Greg Stanton have been picked as the best Republican and Democratic elected officials, respectively, by the readers of the Arizona Capitol Times.

To celebrate, the mayors recreate the opening of the classic ‘70s sitcom in a video called “Scott & Greg.” Smith and Stanton dance their way through the landmarks of their respective downtowns — and then they spot the shiny copper dome of the state Capitol.

The video runs with the speculation Smith and Stanton could eventually launch a campaign for governor.

The dancing duo make their way to the Executive Tower and look up toward the governor’s office on the ninth floor.

In a not-so-subtle jab at the birther controversy, the pair goes straight from the Capitol to a state records office to get copies of their official birth certificates.
