“Doozers” is the term that Dean and Andi Barness affectionately dub subscribers to their daily deal website.
DoozyOfADeal.com is a Phoenix-based site that features a daily promotion from a Valley business, as well as a daily mini deal.
Dean Barness said that after disappointing contribution numbers for a fundraiser were revealed at his PTO meeting; he and his wife realized that in a bad economy it’s hard to get excited about purchasing cookie dough and wrapping paper.
Out of necessity comes invention, and the duo combined their commitment to fundraising with their love of Groupon.com to concoct Doozy of a Deal.
Groupon is a website that offers deals on products or things to do in almost 100 cities, but only if a minimum number of people purchase the deal within 24 hours.
Groupon boasts on its main webpage that more than $250 million dollars have been saved by users.
An amount of $3,401.14 is proudly displayed on Doozy of a Deal’s website, and it represents how much has been given back to the community.
That number continues to grow as word of Doozy’s daily offers spread across the Valley.
The focus on the local community is what makes Doozy of a Deal different from Groupon.
“It’s a win-win-win situation. Businesses get people in the door, subscribers get to try new places and things for limited risk financially, and non-profits get 7.5 percent of each purchase,” Barness said.
When Doozy of a Deal launched in March, Ahwatukee Foothills-based AZ R.E.S.C.U.E. was the first non-profit organization to sign up as a beneficiary.
AZ R.E.S.C.U.E. has the second largest subscriber support base behind only Phoenix Children’s Hospital, and they have the most money raised out of the 50-plus organizations now partnered with Doozy of a Deal.
AZ R.E.S.C.U.E. president Jennifer Berry said that the $485 raised through Doozy of a Deal helped save 10-year-old Shih Tzu Silias.
Silias, who was rescued from a shelter’s kill list on June 8, was found malnourished with matted hair and deteriorating teeth.
“I knew Silias was going to cost us a lot, but every once in a while we get to help an animal that needs us the most,” Berry said.
Silias had to have 10 teeth removed and his dental work alone cost $465. He was also neutered, groomed and given some much needed TLC.
Berry said that Silias is now recovering and living with his foster father, Charles Wolff, in Ahwatukee Foothills. He will be available for adoption soon.
“The money from Doozy of a Deal helped give Silias a second chance at life. Doozy of a Deal makes it an act of charity to get a $10 discount from a restaurant,” Berry said.
There haven’t been any Ahwatukee businesses that have offered deals on the website yet, but Berry said she thinks if there were businesses that AZ R.E.S.C.U.E.’s East Valley/Ahwatukee customers could shop at through Doozy of a Deal, their deals would sell out.
Barness said that because there aren’t any Ahwatukee businesses teamed up with Doozy of a Deal yet he thinks that subscribers will jump on deals in the area when they are offered.
“It’s a great way to get buzz and excitement for a business, and unlike direct mail coupon packs, it costs no money out-of-pocket,” Barness said.
Restaurants and spa packages usually sell the most certificates, according to Barness.
Doozy of a Deal looks for businesses willing to offer at least 50 percent off retail price, but Barness said they are flexible in finding a deal that works for everyone.
