The Tuscany Theatre in Gilbert opened its doors Dec. 14, celebrating an all-new destination for family entertainment, community theatre, art and education.

The new 5,000-square-foot facility boasts a 120-seat theatre with plush seating, a rehearsal/learning studio, a vocal studio, box office, lobby, restrooms and backstage areas.

“We’ve had a lot of people come out, and everybody is so excited,” says Marcus Ellsworth, co-founder of the Tuscany and drama department head at American Leadership Academy high school in Queen Creek. “It really is a community theatre, a non-profit, so anyone who participates with us — they own it, the community owns it.”

Tuscany Theatre is home to the following organizations and performing groups:

The Black Mustache Old Fashioned Melodrama Co.

Audiences will boo the villain, cheer for the hero and sigh for the heroine as they interact with the professional, adult cast of these original melodramas. With hilarious oleos, interactive plots and elaborate sets and costumes, Black Mustache shows are designed to appeal to and be appropriate for all ages.

Tia Rosa’s restaurant, located in the same complex, is partnering with the Tuscany to offer dinner packages with Black Mustache shows. Seniors and children will get special discounts. Shows will begin 7 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings and 2 p.m. Saturday afternoons.

For offerings, call (480) 334-4003 or visit TheBlackMustache.com.

Actor’s Youth Theatre

Celebrating ten years of excellence in youth theatre, the multi- AriZoni and National Youth Arts Award-winning AYT produces award-winning Broadway musicals and classic plays performed by youth 18 and younger for family audiences.

With ten productions each year, AYT provides plenty of opportunities for local youth to participate. Actor’s Youth Studio also provides a full line up of arts learning opportunities, from acting lessons to dance, voice and art.

For shows, call (480) 907-7050 or go to ActorsYouthTheatre.org.

Off the Cuff Comedy Improv

Mondays at Tuscany Theatre will feature improv and family comedy acts, beginning with this troupe that puts the audience right into the action (and has performed at Changing Hands Bookstore in Tempe for years).

“They’re also starting a new Off the Cuff Jr. troupe that kids can get invovled in. Auditions are going to be held at the beginning of January,” says Ellsworth.
