Mesa Public Schools will host the High School Harp Ensemble on Feb. 24 at 7 p.m.
The district's High School Harp Ensemble is directed by Karen Miller – an award-winning teacher who will perform selections that will be featured in the group’s tour to Chicago next month. This year marks Miller’s 40th year in Mesa Public Schools; she teaches 78 students at 12 schools.
Miller received the 2014 Excellence in Teaching Music Award from the Arizona Music Educators Association in January. She has been a leader in making harp available to Mesa music students since 1974.
The district places two to four harp students in the High School All-State Orchestra and Band every year. Former harp students have gone on to study music at colleges and have pursued careers in fields such as international jazz performances, community orchestras, hospice care and teaching.
Previous ensembles have performed at receptions and dinners at venues including the Arizona Capitol, the Phoenix Art Museum, the National Conference of the American Harp Society and the University of Arizona.
The Harp Ensemble Concert will be held at 155 N. Center St. in Mesa.
