While overall this year robberies are down in Tempe, multiple thefts of iPhones and laptop computers near and around the main Arizona State University campus have occurred recently, the Tempe Police Department said in a press release.

The thefts occur when one or more suspects approach a victim and either snatch it out of the victim’s hand or distract the victim by asking for directions and then grabbing the gadget and running away. There have been no weapons used in the robberies.

The suspects have been described as two to three males in their late teens or early 20s. ASU police arrested three suspects Monday night, but they believe more people might be involved in the thefts.

To prevent this from happening to you, be aware of your surroundings, Tempe police said. Don’t walk with headphones on and don’t display your devices while walking. Travel in groups and avoid isolated areas. Tempe police also say that if you do become a victim of theft, robbery or assault, you should report it right away.

Anyone with information regarding these crimes can call (480) 350-8311.
