It all comes down to this.

Ahwatukee Little League major and minor teams will take the field for the last time this season as the championship games play out on Saturday.

The president of Ahwatukee Little League described this season as a huge success and he expects this weekend’s games to be nothing short of exciting.

The league saw an overall increase of 25 percent of players and had a total of 430 kids span the four divisions — majors, minors, farm and coach pitch.

“Little league is community-based baseball,” president Michael Kearney said. “It is for all levels of players, from beginners to all-stars, and having those options is important for us.”

After this weekend, the game will continue for some majors players, as the District 13 all-star tournament starts on June 29. This is the first step in getting to the capstone games — the Little League World Series. The winner of the District 13 tournament will advance to the state tournament. The winner there will go on to San Bernardino for the regional tournament, with the victor moving on to Williamsport, Ind.

“The big hook for us is the Little League World Series,” Kearney said. “The kids love it and they get to watch it on ESPN every year.”

It hits even closer to home because as recent as 2006, the Ahwatukee All-Star team made it to the World Series. Last year, they were close as they finished second in the state tournament.

The championship games begin at 10 a.m. and noon at Ahwatukee Park, which is located on Warner Road, behind Nello’s Ahwatukee, 4710 E. Warner Road. The use of the field was donated by the Ahwatukee Board of Management.

There will be opening and closing ceremonies where awards will be given out to the home run king of the majors as well as sportsmanship awards to one minor and major player.
