It's not every day that someone gets to play golf for charity.

But Ahwatukee Foothills resident Jim Hunt did just that when he and a team of golfers raised almost $11,000 for the March of Dimes, a non-profit organization that strives to improve the quality of life for mothers and their babies.

Hunt has raised funds for March of Dimes in the past and at one point was the chairman of the board for the organization when he lived in Nebraska.

Since moving to Arizona, he continues to be involved on a yearly basis with the organization.

Each year, Farmer's Insurance, as a national corporation, puts on Be a Hero for Babies Day and raises millions of dollars for March of Dimes.

Hunt, agency manager and partner for Henderson-Hunt Insurance Agency (Farmer's) in Tempe, partnered with Damage Control in Mesa to put together a team of nine golfers who were individually sponsored by friends and family.

"The average person who donated said I'll give you $100 or $200," Hunt said. "It didn't matter how much they gave, they wanted to support the March of Dimes."

On July 25 the teams played 100 holes of golf over the course of about seven straight hours at Crosswoods Indoor Golf Center in Gilbert.

"The last couple of years we played outside and it can get really tough," Hunt said. "We were thankful that we could play indoors this year but it's still not easy taking 400 to 500 swings over that time."

The Be a Hero for Babies Day began in 2007. Farmer's Insurance wanted to see if it could raise more than $1 million in a single day and Hunt said they had more than 16,000 people manning phones and collecting donations.

The amount raised has gone up every year since then. In 2010, $2.65 million was collected for March of Dimes. To find out more, visit www.MarchofDimes.com.
