Since the consolidation of divisions two seasons ago, the state swimming meet has become reserved for the elite.

When an athlete finishes in the top eight these days there are no questions of their ability in the pool.

Not that there was before when there were five divisions, but the state competitors nowadays know they are going to have to be at their best to receive a medal at the end of the meet.

While several area athletes found a way to get there, only a few from the Ahwatukee Foothills area were able to do well enough to be singled out by the All-Tribune selection committee.

The girls' end of the pool had the deepest talent as three individuals were selected as some of the East Valley's top competitors.

Mountain Pointe junior Clara Jenck, who won the 100 backstroke with a time of 56.51 seconds, more than a full second better than her nearest competitor, earned first-team honors.

She also finished third in the 200 freestyle in Division I.

"Winning is nice, but I'm mostly concerned about the time, whoever wins out there, they deserved it," Jenck said at state meet.

Desert Vista junior Mary Geavaras also received first-team honors after finishing third in the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.40 after she finished eighth as a sophomore.

Ahwatukee Foothills resident and Valley Christian junior Brianna Jurries was a second-team selection after she won the 100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke in Division II.

The boys team had only one honoree in Mountain Pointe junior Ben Fitch, who finished third in the 200 and 500 freestyle, as he was named to the All-Trib second team.

He also was the anchor for the team's fifth-place finish in the 200 free.
