Surprise police officers arrested two men Tuesday night who they say were attempting to rob the Radio Shack in the 12700 block of West Bell Road.

At approximately 10:15 p.m., police said the store manager, who had closed for the night, was in the process of leaving when he realized he forgot something inside the store.

When he re-entered his store, he inadvertently set off the store’s alarm. Police responded and found the men lying in wait, hiding behind a Dumpster at the rear of the store. The two men, identified as Benjamin Kuehl, 19, and Eric Ruiz, 18, both from Phoenix, were found in possession of black ski masks, gloves, empty duffle bags and a simulated semi-automatic pistol, police said.

The two told police that their plan was to rob the store manager as he left with the nightly deposit, police said. Both men were booked into the Maricopa County Jail.
