Given the opportunity, coffee can be so much more than just a pit stop on the way to work. A coffee house with ambiance is a space to curl up with a book, study, work, meet up, procrastinate, knit… whatever. But don’t think you have to venture north to Seattle and brave the land of rain and flannel to find a good one. Here are a few of my East Valley favorites, where you’ll want to hang out, order a cup and stay a while.

Talebu Coffee and Wine Cafe

2095 N. Alma School Road, Chandler

(480) 899-9633 or TalebuCoffee.com

Coffee isn’t the only way to catch a buzz at Talebu. A blend of coffee house, wine bar, and café, this fair-trade loungey spot is decorated with local art — and host to open mic nights during the week and live music on Saturdays. If you’re like me, drinking makes you hungry, so be sure to peruse the menu of gourmet sandwiches and pastries to find the perfect pairing for your drink of choice.

Bergies Coffee Roast House

309 N. Gilbert Road, Gilbert

(480) 497-3913 or BergiesCoffee.com

Bergies is a cozy cottage in the heart of downtown Gilbert. The beautiful garden patio is just the place to catch some rays and sip a cappuccino made from Bergies’ own small-batch roasted beans (available for purchase). Of course, what coffee house would be complete without a reason to stay for just one more cup? Fridays are Trivia Night and Saturdays are stage to live acoustic tunes under the stars.

Lo Fi Coffee

105 W. Main St., Mesa

(480) 444-4444 or LoFiCoffee.com

Lo Fi Coffee is located in downtown Mesa, inside the Historic Nile Theater. This rockin’ coffee house has teamed up with The Nile and is regular host to local acts and bands on tour. Not only does this hot java spot serve a great latte, but it is also an exhibition space for many local artists. In case you’re not a coffee connoisseur, rest assured that the laid back baristas are happy to explain the locally brewed menu and help you pick the perfect coffee concoction.
