I love the fact that my 4-year-old daughter has shown some interest in sports and even some ability to be a decent athlete.

That's all well and good, but after a handful of stories I have written in the past few weeks I better start saving some money now if she continues playing sports.

There are youth track athletes that have gone to South Carolina, New Mexico and Kansas in successive weekends.

There are wrestlers going to Idaho, North Dakota and Mexico this summer.

There is a Little League team that already spent a week in Flagstaff, heads to Tucson this week with the possibility of trips to California and Pennsylvania on the horizon.

Football players are going to camps, combines and workouts every weekend and AAU travel basketball players have been to California and Nevada.

There are fundraisers but not as many hotel stays and flights.

Point reward programs or not, this is a bundle of expenses that can't be easy to handle for most families.

As a parent it has to be a hard thing to balance. Of course you want your child to succeed, compete and enjoy something, in this case a sport, they've shown a passion for but at the same time you don't want to have to take on a crazy amount of debt to allow it happen.

Right I now, I get all riled up when we have to spend $70 for a dance recital let alone traveling to three different states in a month's time.

Too keep my blood pressure - and minimum monthly payment - down I better start saving now.
