Mesa’s own Southwest Shakespeare Company will present its second annual Winterfest Repertory, performing two plays in alternating time slots throughout the month of January.

“Macbeth” opens Friday, Jan. 10. “The Taming of the Shrew” opens Saturday, Jan. 11. Both are at Mesa Arts Center.

Repertory allows patrons to see these two masterpieces at a variety of possible times on successive nights, a week apart or even on the same day.

“The Rotating Repertory in Winterfest is a unique experience, resulting in a celebration of the greatest playwright in the English language, perhaps in any language,” says Southwest Shakespeare Company’s producing artistic director Jared Sakren. “The two plays will speak to each other; they are directed by a single director, performed by a single company of actors, and will be as entertaining and illuminating as anything we have ever put on a stage — and that’s saying something.”

“The Taming of the Shrew” is a rollicking romantic comedy. This tale of two misfits reveals universal truths about the battle of the sexes.

Shakespeare’s shortest tragedy, “Macbeth” is a chilling portrait of a ruthless lord and his scheming wife who, with the influence of a trio of witches, unleash a reign of terror unparalleled in the history of theatre.
