Polo

One of the most novel events of the spring? Arizona Polo Club’s Picnic and Polo Clinic.

Spectators are invited April 20 to bring a picnic lunch and spend the afternoon on the fringes of the polo field, watching mallet-wielding riders on horseback charge after a fast-moving ball.

There will also be chances to learn how to play the game, as club members will be running demonstrations and clinics for interested spectators the same day.

Bring a blanket or lawn chairs for seating, along with binoculars, if you have them, to keep on top of the action at the far end of the field.

Bring, too, your common sense. Polo is a fast game played with powerful, heavy animals with a will of their own. Leave at least 10 yards between you and the edge of the field, and never sit at the ends of the field. Always keep an eye on the action, and watch children closely. Pets must be kept on a leash at all times or, better yet, left at home.

The informal event takes place 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, April 20, at WestWorld of Scottsdale, 16601 N. Pima Road. Admission and parking are free. For information, call (480) 990-1172 or visit ArizonaPolo.com.
