With Congress sending up smoke signals that it might soon consider a new highway spending bill, it’s worth reminding lawmakers that Arizona is one of more than half of the states nationwide that sends more federal gas dollars to Washington than it gets back.

Because of the economic opportunities that a well-crafted measure could afford and an emerging political consensus for advancing such an effort, it is time for all involved parties to come together and craft a new transportation bill that benefits all of America, not just a few select states.

Our state’s transportation needs are real, but the current funding mechanism is coming up short for Arizona.
