An elderly driver and a 22-year-old bicyclist each were transported to local hospitals after two separate traffic accidents in Ahwatukee Foothills Friday morning.

The first happened around 9:30 a.m. when a young man on a bicycle traveling southbound on 48th Street attempted to cross Chandler Boulevard in a crosswalk at the wrong time, said Phoenix Police Officer Kevin Ham. A man driving a Buick Enclave SUV was making a right turn from 48th Street onto westbound Chandler Boulevard at the same time.

The impact of the bicyclist caved in the car's rear passenger side door. He was taken to Maricopa Medical Center for precautionary measures, Ham said. The driver was not issued a citation.

"We determined the bicyclist was at fault. Bicycles need to follow the same traffic laws as motor vehicles," he said.

The second accident, just after 10 a.m., occurred when a woman driving a Cadillac failed to avoid a Lexus that had stalled out and stopped in the right-hand lane of westbound Pecos Road west of Interstate 10, said Phoenix Police Officer Jim Bales. The Lexus' driver was not in the car at the time of impact.

The woman driving the Cadillac was put in a neck brace and taken by ambulance as a precaution, as well, Bales said.
